Choose the first useful filter
Location and category are often the beginning of a directory visit. Decide which comes first for your audience. A neighbourhood guide may start with place, while a specialist directory may start with the service. Avoid an opening form that asks for every possible preference.
Make each listing comparable
Keep a consistent order for name, category, location and practical information. Explain the source and freshness of listing data in your own directory. Do not mix decorative editorial labels with factual accessibility or opening-hours information.
Offer a useful path without a map
A list view should remain useful when the map is unavailable or difficult to operate. Include written locations and clear links. On smaller screens, filters should be easy to reopen without covering the entire list or discarding the current selection.
